Adolf was the fourth of six children born to Alois Hitler and his third wife, Klara Pölzl, and the first to survive childhood. He was baptized a Catholic.

His father Alois had adopted the surname of his father Johann Georg Hitler (also spelled Heidler), and worked as a customs official.
