  • For much of her 13-year career in journalism, Victoria Corderi has developed award-winning stories about everything from slum life in Miami to women in prison to organized crime among Cuban immigrants in the United States.

    Her reporting has won three Emmy awards and a George Foster Peabody Award.

    She dodged bullets on reporting assignments in Central America and Haiti. But it wasn`t until 1990, when she took a job as co-anchor of the ”CBS Morning News,” sitting next to Charles Osgood, that the general public, including the Hispanic community, really noticed her.

    Hispanic Business magazine, for one, last year put Corderi on its list of the 100 most influential Hispanics in the United States.

    And the Washington-based Mexican-American Women`s National Association (MANA) gave Corderi its Las Primeras award, which honors Hispanic women who are first in their fields.

    Corderi, a Cuban-American, is sardonic about this late recognition-”for reading from a teleprompter.
